What Is FTTH
FTTH, or Fiber To The Home, is a method of optical communication transmission that extends fiber optic cables all the way from the data center to residential or workplace end users. It is part of the broader concept of FTTx, or Fiber To The x, where “x” represents various destinations within the optical communication network.
In a FTTH setup, the entire optical distribution network, from the data center to the end users, is covered. This comprehensive solution not only delivers higher bandwidth, but also improves network transparency, transmission rate, wavelength, and protocols, providing advanced capabilities for efficient and high-performance communication.
How Does FTTH Work
The FTTH network relies on an ODN (Optical Distribution Network), which establishes a communication channel between the OLT (Optical Line Terminal) in the server room and the ONU (Optical Network Unit) in the end-users’ houses, thus enabling data transmission between the data center and the end users.
The ODN network comprises three subsystems that are color-coded: the backbone optical cable subsystem, the distribution optical cable subsystem, and the access optical cable terminal subsystem. These subsystems work together to transmit optical information throughout the network, with fiber optic cables being the critical infrastructure. The FTTH network uses different types of fiber optic cables, including backbone fiber optic cable, distribution optical cables, and FTTH drop cable.
In addition to the fiber optic cables, the ODN also consists of various fiber optic products, such as ODF (Optical Distribution Frame), fiber patch panel, fiber cabinet, fiber splice closure, and fiber optic distribution box. These products connect all the optical cables and ensure that the entire optical communication system is well-organized and operates at high performance.
